Editorial Comments:
Personally, doing my yoga at home, I just bum around in my slackies – but when I do venture out to classes I do make an effort There are loads of online shops selling yoga fashion, but one my favorites is Barefoot Yoga Co.. They’re a good, wholesome American company with very good eco-friendly credentials – and a really lovely range of yoga clothing for men and women.

Yoga Training Clothes
By Beth Shaw

Yoga clothing is basically anything that you wear to your normal gym workout. For several months I used it, I’d simply wear soccer shorts with a T-shirt as my yoga workout clothes. A lot of other people in the class invested more seriously in yoga workout clothing, but I didn’t really see any advantage to it. My clothes were as flexible as theirs, and I had no trouble doing stretches in it at least no trouble that stemmed in the clothing I had been wearing! These were also a good deal cheaper, that I considered a huge advantage. And I’m totally comfortable with it.

After I got pretty serious about it, however, I decided to pick up some yoga workout outfits found in stores. I had to admit that in some ways they really helped. The thing about yoga is it needs intense and perfect concentration to acheive it right. Any physical discomfort should be limited whenever possible, and everything must be done to help you relax and feel at ease. Yoga workout clothes do that by covering your body more evenly in the comfortable, stretchy material. You feel comfortably encased in the warm protective layer which wicks sweat off from the skin and keep you at the perfect temperature. Because yoga workout clothing is stretchy, they don’t ride up and ride down as you’re stretching, eliminating one distraction that shorts have. They also begin to look very good on you when you condition your body and get in shape.

However my recommendations for new yoga practitioners are to skip yoga workout clothes in the beginning. Just use anything you have purchased to wear when you attend the gym, provided that it’s flexible enough or baggy enough to let you do yoga. When you’ve been at it for a few months, then, try ordering some yoga clothes. Start with 1 or 2 outfits just for the feel of it, after which decide whatever you like. You may find that you do better in normal gym clothes, and that is alright. A lot of people, however, say that they find using yoga workout clothes more comfortable. It’s all just a matter of personal preference.

You also don’t need to confine yourself to workout clothes for yoga in order to find something good to stretch in. Aerobics workout clothes, clothes for dancing, and whatever else can be utilized in physical activities which involve difficult stretching work great. The motions involved with yoga are far from unique. You can use them in other various forms of physical activity, so clothing that works for those exercises will work well for yoga too. Still, yoga workout clothes are some of the most comfortable ones out there.

Though it’s not really a necessity, investing on them is still depending upon your choice. Whatever way you want to dress up during yoga exercises doesn’t really matter so long as you are comfortable and enjoying what you are doing.

Editorial Comment: Another fine article from the knowledgeable Beth Shaw. Beth is the director of YogaFit, which is an excellent company that does encourage doing your yoga in a class or studio – but she is still very confident that yoga dvds and yoga online learning kits are great ways to begin learning yoga.

Yoga Not For You? Think Again
by Beth Shaw

To whoever has never tried out yoga, it may seem a difficult task. Rarely clad males and females having the ability to distort themselves in seemingly difficult positions may be enough to put people off before they even try to try any of the postures.

Hatha yoga is a non-competitive exercise. Its development arises from continuous practice. Making the body to accomplish intense positions though it is not prepared yet, is not the proper way. Yoga leans more on the exercise regime and for individuals who mastered this discipline, simply joined with their lifestyle.

The results are noticeable too. More powerful muscles, better versatility and an inner calm can’t help but be forecasted outwards. Family and friends might not be able to pinpoint the gap but they may progressively observe that there’s something different.

The postures are known as asanas and the breathing is called pranayama, together guide the practitioner to relax the body and mind at will, have increased energy, versatility and experiencing quietness in the crisis. Nowadays in this frenzied society, feeling calm and inwardly confident will help a student to endure the daily tensions and strains.

Yoga delivers clarity of mind and confidence towards the serious student who practices with center and intent every day. The ideal time to train is in the early morning, though for most, the body seems rigid and sore in the early hours, so the yoga session can be modified to ensure that it fits the person’s physique and agenda.

Everybody, may it be young or old, can practice yoga. There aren’t any limitations on who can and who cannot. The most important aspect needed is the drive and purpose to learn. Disability or age may reduce the movement however development can nonetheless be attained even if the movement is lessened.

Preferably, it is beneficial for newcomers to visit a class and so, experience professional instruction so that they know they’ve got the proper alignment within each posture. The teacher will also describe the benefits of each position and will present the posture in its early and more established phases.

There are postures to avoid for certain conditions like pregnancy for example so you will need to make sure the trainer is aware of any conditions or illnesses and this then guarantees the security of the student.

Yoga can be done anywhere and that is the good thing about it. When you’re at home, at the office, the beach, at class or the garden outside your house, you can do yoga. Lastly, simply enjoy while practicing yoga, regardless of which discipline you try and where you want to practice. Enjoy the feeling of exercising your body and versatility and improve your health.

YogaFit has a great deal of really informative advice in all areas of yoga dvd poses, instruction, and everything else. Beth Shaw also has a number of yoga conference gatherings several times annually and is regarded as yoga master and mogul around the globe.

Her concerns about starting at home are spot on and she recommends using an online yoga course or dvd to guide your first steps into yoga. I hope you enjoy this article and it encourages you to start learning yoga at home.

Yoga Positions for Starters
By Beth Shaw

Yoga is the popular kind of physical exercise that appeals to a lot of people due to its holistic way of conditioning body and mind. But not only are yoga exercises good for physical health, they also address mental and emotional health, because controlling both kinds of health leads to a person’s general fitness. In terms of physical advantages, doing yoga exercises daily can help enhance flexibility, posture, circulation and digestion and concerning mental health, yoga can help to eliminate stress by giving relief. Yoga exercises achieve this by utilizing postures, breathing and meditation meant to unwind our bodies and strengthen the body.

While yoga attracts many people’s interest due to its health benefits, sometimes they are discouraged because of the perceived hardships associated with practicing yoga positions. Indeed, yoga can be challenging and taxing since the body often isn’t accustomed to moving in ways that it normally does. Also, if yoga positions are executed incorrectly, they can actually damage the body. Because of this, it’s essential to newbies to be supervised and to begin in a slower pace. It is advisable to begin with the basic and easy positions and working towards higher stage.

Yoga positions include the ones that are performed while standing, reclining, sitting, bending forward, backwards, to the side, twisting, inverting, and balancing. These are several different poses and it can seem intimidating in the beginning. Yoga positions for newbies are those which are the easiest and very basic. Beginners should begin with yoga positions that they can deal with, before they gradually build up to the more advanced yoga positions.

Yoga positions on the ground are good for beginners because they don’t require as much balance and strength as other positions. Probably the most common yoga positions for newbies is the siddhasana pose, a sitting pose that most people commonly stereotype yoga meditation with. It’s the one where you sit on the floor with legs crossed and hands on the knees and palms facing up. This position will work for back posture and for opening the hips. Another good basic position is baddha konasana, which involves sitting with your legs in a butterfly position, feet together and fingers interlaced around the toes. Baddha konasana can also be best for the spine and hips, plus it strengthens the chest area.

When practicing yoga positions for starters, remember to accompany the positions with proper breathing, which is important even though it’s not a physical body movement of the exercise. Practice these positions daily and as you feel accustomed, you’ll be able to move on to the intermediate yoga positions. Make an effort to practice everyday for around 15 minutes .Most experts recommend a minimum of ten minutes of practice daily. However, to train a range of postures and incorporate breathing or meditation, 15 to 25 minutes is essential. These brief practice sessions also needs to be interspersed with longer sessions several times a week. Eventually you can perform the rest of the yoga positions and can appreciate it more.

There are many different styles of yoga and while all yoga will certainly benefit you, if is important to find a style that you are comfortable with and that suits you. Here is a quick guide to the styles of yoga that are most popular. This should help you find which practice is right for you.

Hatha

Hatha is a term used to describe many different types of yoga – but any yoga style known as ‘hatha’ will be gentle and conducted at a slow pace. Hatha is ideal for beginners yoga and anyone wanting a good introduction to yoga.

Vinyasa

Vinyasa also describes many different syles, but vinyasa yoga is based more upon breath-synchronised movement. A slightly more vigorous type of yoga than hatha, vinyasa makes use of sun-salutations, whcih are a sequences of poses with specific breathing requirements. These warm up your body for the intense stretching that vinyasa yoga brings in later in the class.

Ashtanga

Ashtanga is often called Power Yoga and this style is a fast-paced, intense form of yoga. It is quite a demanding style because although only a set series of poses is performed, the focus is on the ‘flow’ – moving through them quickly and staying in constant motion.

Iyengar

Iyengar yoga is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar and is the style of yoga that focusses most completely on bodily alignment. The thought is that your body must be properly positioned in each each pose – when it is, you recieve maximum benefit from the pose. Where other styles often speak of ‘flow’ from one yoga pose to the next, in Iynegar yoga each pose is usually held for a much longer period of time. Iyengar also uses yoga props, such as blankets, blocks and straps to hold the body in place and achieve a more perfect alignment.

Kundalini

Kundalini yoga is extremely focused on breath and energy. While all poses involve some kind of breathing instruction, Kundalini yoga uses controlled breath with physical movement to free energies trapped in the lower body and allowing them to move upwards through your body.

Bikram or Hot Yoga

Bikram yoga was developed by Bikram Choudhury. This is the style known as Hot Yoga and is practiced in a 95-100 degree room. The idea behind this is that the heat loosens your muscles (which should make injury less likely) and the enormous amount of sweating you’ll do promotes cleansing. Only 26 poses are used in Bikram yoga, generally in the same sequence each time.

There are retreats in all different levels, but if you’re just beginning your yoga journey finding a Yoga for Beginners retreat is a great way to pick up everything you need to know to get you ready for practicing at home or walking into a yoga studio for the first time.

You can find retreats in your area simply by doing a google search, but if you’re after something more, consider taking a yoga holiday.

A yoga holiday is just a retreat in a fantastic location. Last year I attended a Hatha yoga retreat in Fiji – in the beautiful South Pacific. The retreat/holiday ran for one week. There were 7 other students there and our teacher, and because we were all in ‘holiday mood’ we quickly became friends and very comfortable working together. We had a morning session every day, then a very healthy breakfast, a bit of a rest and then a mid-morning session. After that, the rest of the day was ours to relax by the pool and site-see around Savusavu. It was such a beautiful location, and really friendly casual resort and those things, combined with an excellent teacher meant that I picked up so many new tips and tricks. My yoga was certainly expanded and improved in such a short time. I would never have achieved the same results if I hadn’t attended the retreat.

So, retreats and yoga holidays can be excellent for beginners or those wishing to expand their yoga. The skills you will learn over the weekend, or the week, will enhance your home practice no end! Plus, yoga retreats are almost always in a peaceful and tranquil environment – somewhere beautiful. They’re worth it just for the time-out!

Have you ever wanted to do yoga, but were nervous about going to a class for the first time? Maybe you didn’t want to feel like a complete beginner in front of a bunch of strangers…? Don’t you wish there could be some way to learn the basics of yoga in the comfort and privacy of your own home, so you could walk into that first yoga class with confidence and self-assurance? Why not learn yoga at home?

Yoga has so many benefits. On a physical level, yoga is excellent for your health in general, and will increase your fitness, help you loose weight, increase your flexibility, and can even massage and stimulate the internal organs of your body to help keep away disease. Yoga is also wonderful for detoxing the body, toning your muscles and removing stress and worry from your life. It is the ultimate fitness activity.

But walking into a yoga class for the first time and knowing absolutely nothing can be a very daunting experience.

I know how that feels. When I started yoga a few years ago, I had no idea what I was in for. I had some vague memories of attending one yoga class when I was in high school, but that was it. Would I be fit enough? Would I be able to do all those poses? Would everyone be looking at me?

What I wanted was to learn yoga at home, and then, as soon as I felt comfortable and confident with the basics attend a class. And so I did. Learning yoga at home is possible through a wide variety of DVDs, books or, as I did, through the internet. I subscribed to an online yoga course that gave me video tutorials, diagrams, as well as ebooks to absorb and learn the lingo. I also recommend subscribing to a magazine such as Yoga Journal, which will assist with teaching beginner poses and rounding out your yoga education.

Learning yoga at home using an online e-course gives you the chance to learn at your own pace and to practice at your own speed (no stress keeping up with everyone else in the class.) An e-course will give you the techniques and the understanding to maintain your own yoga practice. You can practice whenever you have the time, when it suits you. And learning yoga at home will save you hundreds of dollars too in the long run.

Prasara Yoga Primer offers a yoga e-course which is ideal for beginners as well as those who have already begun to explore yoga. The course is designed to be completed in your own time and at your own pace, but promises you will see results in your desired body shape after just 3-4 weeks practicing as little as 20 minutes per day. In that time you will have learned enough about yoga to know which styles you wish to pursue AND be confident about walking into a real-life yoga class and look good!

Yoga is a great way to loosen up your body, become leaner and stronger, loose weight, and relax. Basically, Yoga is made up of a bunch of poses, positions, and transitions done with the body. They can be very difficult to do at first, but I assure you, if you stick to if and keep working at it on a regular basis, they will become mush easier and very enjoyable.

Yoga is great because it can be a really intense workout for your body, but not feel like a really intense workout. The moves and transitions are fluid and slow yet before you know it, you will be sweating! So, if you are like me and do not enjoy high-speed cardio or aerobics, give Yoga a try!

1. Set up your space. Lay the Yoga mat or a towel down on the floor in the space where you are going to be practicing. The best way is to lay it directly in front of your screen with the narrower side closest to the screen. You have to be able to see the screen while lying down on the mat.

Make sure you have water or some sort of liquid close by.

2. Go to YouTube.com or search Google Video for “Yoga for beginners”. There are lots of great instructional Yoga videos on YouTube. If you have a specific part of your body you would like to work on more than others, for example your abs or thighs, try searching for that specific area. For example, search for “Yoga for beginners abs” and YouTube will search for all videos with those words in the title and/or description.

3. Choose a video that you will enjoy and is a full-length video, not just a 3 minute ad for a Yoga studio or video set. I suggest searching for “Sadie Nardini” her videos are great. She is a great Yoga instructor in New York and has over 150 Yoga videos and they range from very basic to more advanced. She even has special videos to help those who are not very flexible and suggest great tips on fixing your poses.

Here is Sadie Nardini’s Channel link: http://www.youtube.com/user/sadienardini?blend=4&ob=4#p/u

4. Do not over do it and stay on a schedule! Once you have found a few videos that you like, favorite them for easy access later. Decide on a schedule and try to stick to it. Doing Yoga on a regular basis, even if it is only for 5 or 10 minutes a day, will help you loosen up and become leaner and stronger. However, if you try to go for an hour or longer on your first few days, you will probably end up not liking it and give up. Slow and steady is the best policy for Yoga.
